Some people emphasize the differences between men and women. ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ has been a very popular book, but it makes it seem as though there’s a huge unbridgeable gap between the sexes, or as though men and women are constantly at war with each other.
In her counseling, Jill likes to focus on the common humanity that we share and the reasons that we are in relationship in the first place. By celebrating the strengths of a relationship and the things that we love about each other, we can put the difficulties into better perspective. Anger can actually be a positive thing; more marriages end because of apathy than because of disagreements. Rather than stressing the differences between partners, Jill chooses to emphasize the connections and works to build and strengthen your sense of togetherness.
